SUBWAY®
RESTAURANT CHAIN OPENS
FIRST LOCATION IN HUNGARY
(Milford,
Conn.) September 2004— The first SUBWAY®
restaurant in the Eastern European nation of Hungary has opened its
doors for business.
Owned
and operated by SUBWAY®
franchisee,
John Holm, the restaurant is located near several office buildings,
banks, retail stores and other restaurants in a busy downtown area of
the capital city of Budapest.
“The
reaction from the people of Budapest has been tremendous as they have
eagerly awaited the opening of their first SUBWAY®
restaurant,”
says Sandra Mikulic, Development Agent and Area Development Manager
for the SUBWAY®
restaurant
chain. “Since the restaurant opened for business, people have
been lining up down the street to purchase SUBWAY® food and learn
more about opportunities within the chain.”
As
part of the opening day celebration, George Walker, U.S. Ambassador
to Hungary, participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony. His presence
at the grand opening attracted attention from TV and radio stations
and newspapers from around the nation.
“The
media coverage has greatly helped to promote brand awareness within
Budapest and throughout the country,” commented John Holm, the
proud restaurant owner. Since the restaurant’s opening, there
have been many inquires regarding the SUBWAY®
chain’s franchise opportunities.
“People
are interested in learning about the history of the brand, and about
becoming a part of the SUBWAY®
team. The
Hungarian market is an enormous consumer of fast food, which has an
endless potential for the SUBWAY®
franchise.
This is only the beginning,” added Sandra Mikulic. “Our
goal is for at least 50 SUBWAY®
restaurants
to be open in Hungary within the next 10 years.”
The
SUBWAY®
chain is the largest submarine sandwich franchise, with more than 21,000
locations in 73 countries, including more than 500 restaurants throughout
Europe. The SUBWAY®
chain is also
the second largest fast-food chain in the world and has surpassed McDonald’s
in number of locations in the United States and Canada. Headquartered
in Milford, Conn., the SUBWAY®
restaurant chain was co-founded by Fred DeLuca and Dr. Peter Buck in
1965. That partnership marked the beginning of a remarkable journey—one
that made it possible for thousands of individuals to build and succeed
in their own business. The SUBWAY®
restaurant
chain was named the number one franchise opportunity in all categories
by Entrepreneur magazine in its Annual Franchise 500 ranking for 2004—for
the 12th time in 16 years!
